Article Summary Assignment Instructions
Overview
Reading and understanding original research is an important skill for developmental psychologists. Understanding research methodology and the sections of a journal article is critical for doctoral-level psychologists. This assignment will help you learn to objectively evaluate research and to seek and understand scholarly sources of information and to use them as a source of knowledge. This assignment can also help you begin your
Research Paper: Topic and References Assignment, as the summary you write may later be used in your
Research Paper: Final Submission Assignment.
Instructions
You will write two brief summaries of peer-reviewed, research-based journal articles of your choice that pertain to developmental psychology.
Each summary must be 1 to 3 pages in length. A title page and abstract are not necessary. A reference page should be included that lists the APA-formatted reference of the article or chapter you summarized. No additional references are needed other than the reference for the article you are summarizing.
· Website:
https://www.apa.org/pubs/journals
The summary should focus on:
· what was hypothesized.
· what was done.
· what was found.
· what was concluded.
You can find a list of journals affiliated with the American Psychological Association (APA) on the
Article Summary Assignment pages under
Article Summary Resources. These are not the only acceptable journals – many others are available and may be used for the assignment – but this list is provided to give you examples of scholarly journals. If you click “By Subject” and then click “Developmental Psychology,” you will see journals specific to developmental psychology.
Child Development is another well-respected developmental psychology journal that is not affiliated with the APA. Some of the databases have the option to select “peer-reviewed” sources; selecting this option will help you eliminate non-scholarly sources from your search results. The Jerry Falwell Library is a reliable place to conduct your searches.
You do not need to pay for articles. Articles that ask you to pay for access can generally be accessed through the Jerry Falwell Library without requiring payment.
You may incorporate the summary into your
Research Paper: Final Submission Assignment later in the course, if you choose.
Be sure to review the criteria on the
Article Summary Grading Rubric before beginning this assignment.

The article is titled "Grand challenges in developmental psychology". "Frontiers in
Developmental Psychology" was released by Lillard in 2023. Developmental psychology is
subject to several strong criticisms. These include steering clear of futuristic solutions, enhancing
educational opportunities, addressing the defiance’s of adolescence and adulthood, and
modifying the core theoretical framework of the discipline through the application of novel
metrics and analytical techniques. Lillard's publication laid the groundwork for understanding
and addressing these kinds of challenges and pushed more researchers to do these studies in the
years to come. In a very complex field of developmental psychology, researchers discovered that
neonates knew substantially more than word experimental models indicate, based on
expectation/looking time experimental models for children aged six months and three years. One
example involved attempting to explain why 6-month-olds frequently appear amazed when they
shouldn't know that an object is in a specific location and will look in that direction, while 3-
year-olds can vocally tell someone that an object is in a certain location and that person will look
in that area, suggesting that the 3-year-old wouldn't be amazed by that person acting incorrectly.
In reference to this example, the Bible tells us in Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he
should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
There is talk of new educational approaches that emphasize how important it is for
society to view children as whole human beings rather than as discrete, self-contained bodies and
minds devoid of emotion or movement. A child can offer many special gifts to an educational
institution. settings for learning that are inclusive of all human potential as opposed to rewarding
some people more than others based on how well they score on multiple-choice tests. How can
we assist youth in locating themselves within our society? fostering deep connections and

providing a means of giving back by improving everyone's quality of life through the utilization
of the very precious human qualities.
To put it briefly, the primary duty of developmental psychologists is to help people have
fulfilling lives. Similar to education, we think we know more than we actually do about this
significant life role. Another major issue that needs to be covered in this article is the ability to
inform the audience about outcomes and assist the continuation of those discoveries into a new
application.
The piece entitled "Paternal alienation and developmental psychology's scientific
standing. “The author of "Developmental Psychology" (2022) is Harman et al. The structure and
dynamics of parent-child interactions, the activities that shape them, and the ways in which these
relationships—or lack thereof—affect subsequent development are all explained by
developmental psychology. Many studies have linked the traits of children's relationships with
their parents or other caregivers and the parent-child bond to emotional illnesses in youngsters.
Developmental practices that result in dysfunctional parent-child relationships have been the
subject of theory and research, particularly when parents inform their children that they are
divorcing and will no longer be together. Scholars disagree regarding the empirical validity of
the literature when it comes to children who develop unhealthy associations—also known as
parental alienation, or PA—with one parent at the expense of the other.
This article discusses the conceptual models created to clarify how and why interpersonal
conflict harms parent-child relationships and raises the likelihood of behavioral, affective, and
psychological issues in the kid. It also identifies the elements and procedures that serve as
intermediaries in these relationships. There is a section on "triangulation," which is the term used

to describe the situation in which kids get sucked into their parents' arguments and are forced to
choose a side and avoid the other parent. Variations in children's responses to interparental
conflict have been explained by the theory of process-oriented representation. Even if
understanding certain features of PA and its causes requires the use of these representations, they
are not sufficient in and of themselves. Research on the spillover processes has not yet
individually examined the extent and type of impact that a parent or guardian imparts to the child
from the interparental relationship, nor the child's reaction to each parent. The "Emotional
Security Theory" (EST-R) is heavily stressed, placing the emotional security of the kid or
children in their interactions with each parent at risk, as evidenced by the escalating animosity
and violence coming from parental disagreements. According to this hypothesis, rather than
providing a secure and comforting atmosphere for the child, parental disagreements produce an
environment where the parents can become terrifying.
To sum up, the primary objective of this analysis was to determine if PA research is, as
some detractors of the discipline have asserted, actually "blossoming" or still in its "infancy."
The researchers initially examined if research on PA is multiplicative or if there has been
magnification in the various papers produced about PA throughout time in order to assess these
two opposing perspectives of the state of the field. The second goal was to explain how PA
research contributes to our understanding of how interparental conflicts impact children's
development and can result in the child rejecting and developing an affiliation with one parent or
guardian.
