Part A
Informed Consent-In counseling, clinicians need to take moments at the onset of therapy to inform their clients of certain expectations and legal and ethical elements of counseling. Often, clinicians fail to tell the client that what is said in the therapeutic process is “privileged information” unless the first two confidentiality rules are mentioned: harm to self or others and neglect or abuse. Clinicians are held to a high standard of professional ethics concerning their clients, so we must inform our clients of certain aspects of counseling. States and the ACA Code of Ethics require clinicians to write a “Professional Disclosure Statement” (PDS) that the clients need to sign.
